Feeling Lonely

It's been quite some time since the last post in the Diary. The usual excuse is that time has been extremely short:) And it's true.

It's now been a little over a month since my starting to work with Studio Moderna. And I have to admit, I'm feeling kind of lonely.

The interesting part is the difference between working with a media company or a direct marketing company. The work and the challenges are terrific here, but the one thing that I do miss is being "in the middle of what's happening every day".

The internet industry, simply put, revolves around media companies and internet ad networks, and some internet agencies. If you're there, you're "in the loop".

And if you're not, as I'm discovering, the internet industry just sort of moves by you. It in fact feels like being left for dead somewhere in Alaska.

Of course, you still keep in touch with the same people, but not as much as you used to. You're now dealing with totally different problems. No more lengthy discussions on "why we need industry wide internet media research" or on "what internet media and ad network is getting the upper hand and how", or "how in the world are we going to educate advertisers they need to start investing more in the internet".

And here's the greatest shock for me: the one thing that I miss the most is internet ad sales. I never thought I'd say that, because I actually quite hated it.

But it is sort of romantic, in a really twisted way.

It keeps you "in the loop". You know the entire industry. You know what makes media planners and advertisers and other media tick. It's your job to know. It's what you spend a huge deal of your time on.

You know exactly what advertisers each media is getting and you try to find out how. And they you ponder on how to get them yourself. The list goes on and on.

And for some of us, it really can be romantic.

I'm not saying I'm not enjoying my new post. I am. I'm loving it. Direct marketing is where my home is.

But still, I can't help but to "miss the industry".
